Walking up to Royal Hôtel on Boulevard du Maréchal Lyautey, you get the sense this place has been part of Brazzaville’s fabric for years. The colonial-era boulevard gives it a certain gravitas, though you’ll notice the building could use some touching up around the edges.

Location & Getting Around

The location actually works really well if you know Brazzaville. You’re close enough to the administrative district that business travelers appreciate it, but far enough from the Congo River waterfront to avoid the tourist markup on everything. I mean, you can walk to several good local spots for dinner, and the main commercial areas are easily reachable by taxi — just negotiate the fare beforehand like you would anywhere in Central Africa.

The Room Experience

My room was basic but functional, which pretty much sums up the whole property. The air conditioning worked (crucial in Brazzaville’s humidity), and the bed was comfortable enough for a good night’s sleep. The bathroom had decent water pressure most of the time, though like many places in the region, don’t expect hot water 24/7. What I appreciated was that everything felt clean and maintained — not always a given at this price point.

Dining & Practical Matters

The hotel restaurant serves a mix of Congolese and French dishes, and while it’s not going to win any culinary awards, the local fish preparations are actually quite good. Breakfast is continental-style but includes some local touches that I enjoyed. Parking is available, which matters if you’re driving — street parking in this part of Brazzaville can be tricky, and you don’t want to worry about your vehicle overnight.

Look, Royal Hôtel isn’t going to wow you with fancy amenities or Instagram-worthy interiors. What it offers is reliability in a city where that can be hard to find. The staff speaks French and some English, they understand what international travelers need, and the rates are fair for what you get. It’s the kind of place that works well for business trips or as a comfortable base while exploring Brazzaville — just don’t expect luxury touches at three-star prices.

  It was cheap. The room is fairly large. There was hot water when there was water.
  
  What could be improved: The internet did not function. There was no face towel. The remote for the AC did not function. There were water cuts in the evening. Food was extremely slow at the restaurant. Booking through booking.com was automatically more expensive than booking directly.

  What could be improved: jag bokade Hotell två dagar för väg, när jag kommer framme, fick veta att ingen Rum kvar till mig. Då jag var mycket trött efter lång resa och det var kl 29:30 i natten. Då var mycket stress.
